Carlyle Finishes Second in 1,500 Meters at Pac-10s

TUCSON, Ariz. - On the final day of competition at the Pacfic-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Laura Carlyle finished second in the 1,500-meter finals and Hayley Oveson finished fifth in the 5,000 finals to secure make good cases for themselves for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Eugene, Ore. May 26-28.
"Laura (Carlyle) finishing second which was huge," Oregon State track head coach Kelly Sullivan said following the meet. "The race was filled with women who have been All-Americans and her finishing second surprised a few people."
Carlyle finished second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:20.98 which is just over two seconds off of her school record time that she set earlier this year. Her second place finish earned Oregon State eight points for the championship. Krista Stangel finished 11th in the event.
Oveson ran a time of 16:25.64 in the finals of the 5,000 after coming into the championships with the 16th best time of the entries for the event. With her fifth place finish she earned four points giving the Beavers 12 points which are the most at the Pac-10 Championships since the program was reestablished in 2004.
Jennifer Macias and Abby Chesimet finished 18th and 28th respectively in the 5,000.
Oregon State football student-athlete Obum Gwacham missed the cut for the finals of the triple jump by 1/2 inch with a mark of 48-07.25 to finish 10th overall in the event.
Next up for the Beavers will be the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds May 26-28 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
