STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Laura Carlyle continues to make a name for herself in the track & field community. She broke her own school record in the 1,500-meters Sunday with a time of 4:18.73 to finish third in her heat at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford University.
"It was a great field today, it was a lot of the same women that were at the Mt. SAC Relays a couple of weeks ago," Oregon State head track coach Kelly Sullivan said following the meet. "She reached another level today. She isn't one to show a lot of emotion but she was very happy and excited."
Carlyle jumped out to the front of the pack right at the start and led the pack for the first 400 meters. She stayed at the front of the group and then pulled ahead with a couple of other runners on the final lap. She hung on to finish third in the event.
Carlyle's previous season-best was 4:26.34 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. where she finished 17th overall. She previously set the school record in the event last season with a time of 4:23.86 at the Pacific-10 Conference Track & Field Championships in Berkeley, Calif.
Carlyle came into the weekend ranked 51st on the 2011 Women's NCAA Division I West POP list. Her time Sunday moves her to ninth on the list which will qualify her for the NCAA West Regional which will be held May 26-28 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The Oregon State track team will be back in action at the Oregon Twilight this upcoming Friday at Hayward Field.
