Oregon State vs. Stanford
Pac-10 Tournament
March 9, 2011
Staples Center
Los Angeles, Calif.
Head Coach Craig Robinson
Opening Statement
"I can't tell you how excited we are to have our first Pac-10 tournament win as a team in this era of Oregon State basketball. It's been awhile and it sure feels good. That was a toughness win, a gutsy win. They made plays when they had to. From Devon [Collier]'s sort of New York City lay-up to Jared [Cunningham] making 15-of-20 foul shots, to Ahmad [Starks]'s threes, I couldn't be happier with the team."
On what was going through his mind when Jared Cunningham went to block Jeremy Green on the last play...
"Jared's a great defender, an All-Pac-10 defender. I knew that if he was going for the ball he could get his hand on the ball. He's very good at that. When I saw him get it low and the ball went low, I knew it was a clean hand-on-ball. There was a sense of relief. This game played out just like both teams wanted it to play out. They wanted to make a shot, then foul us and get us to miss a foul shot, just how you practice end of game situations. We were fortunate to eek this one out on foul shots and good defensive plays."
On Jared Cunningham shooting foul shots late...
"He's the guy we want on the line when we need to have foul shots taken. I'm not stunned that he made them but those are some really high pressure foul shots."
On winning the game after facing adversity last weekend...
"I think the guys handled it like men. To see them come back and play the way they did after not playing last game was tremendous. The guys on the bench did a great job of cheering them on. This means more because we had to go through that adversity. We've used the term galvanizing over the three or four days and maybe this was a galvanizing event."
Freshman guard Ahmad Starks
On what he has learned from this and the past two games...
"I've learned that you have to deal with the consequences. You make a mistake, the coach is going to do what he feels is best, and we deal with our punishment. We just have to look past it and come out for a hard game like we did tonight."
Sophomore guard Jared Cunningham
On overall performance in the game...
"I tried to get open to get the ball because I was feeling like I could make the free throws at the end. I did a good job of creating lanes to get the ball and my teammates found me, and I tried to go for the free throw and knock them down at the end."
On the block at the end of the game...
"I saw Ahmad guarding the half-court, so I just tried to go over and double team them and knock a shot off, and put my hand up and block the shot. The ball went out of bounds in time, and we got the win."
On getting the win...
"It's awesome. We played a full 40 minute game and we played as a team. We cut down our turnovers and we only had 11 in this game. Just playing together was the main thing. We have to put this game behind us and look forward to the next one."
On free throw efforts...
"I was just trying to get my stroke, get my follow through and concentrate. A couple of them hit the back of the rim, and as you know, the next ones after that I tried to follow through and get them, and they went in."
