BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The Oregon State women's golf team is tied for eighth place after the first round at the 7th Annual UNLV Spring Invitational being held Monday through Wednesday.
The Beavers shot a 13-over 301 at the par-72, 6,244-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club and are tied with Baylor and Ball State for eighth place in the 15-team field.
"Today's round was better, but you will always want something better than where you are," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "The first nine holes of the course, which was the harder nine of the whole course, winds were about 25 miles per hour, but we played it well.
"I would like to build from the success today and take that a step further and deliver a few more birdies rather than just pars," Alexander added. "Knowing the golf course better would be another thing, because we have not seen the golf course before yesterday. I think our players are beginning to gain momentum and confidence."
Junior Whitney French had three birdies and three bogies to fire an even-par 72 to lead the Beavers and is tied for 14th overall. Freshman Seshia Telles finished with a 3-over 75 for a tie for 32nd, sophomore Rachael Fischer shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 39th and sophomore Chelsey Lind shot a 6-over 78 in her first tournament of the spring season.
"Whitney played really well today," Alexander said. "Chelsey also played very well and she continued to stay steady toward the end of the round, which was good."
BYU shot an 8-under 280 to lead the tournament by two strokes over Oklahoma. Kelsey Vines of 66 fired a 6-under 66 to lead all individuals.
The second round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and live scoring throughout the tournament will be available at www.golfstat.com.
