Philadelphia – After starting the day with a major decision, fourth-seeded senior Colby Covington defeated conference opponent Jacob Swartz in an 8-2 decision to advance to the NCAA Wrestling Quarterfinals for the second straight season to lead the six remaining Beavers, who finished the second session in 14th place with 16.5 points in the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday.
Covington scored six of his eight points on offensive strikes, pulling Swartz back into the circle for the first two takedowns as Swartz looked to escape to reset. An escape point and an extra tally for riding time gave Covington the pass to the quarterfinals and his 19th-straight win.
Last season, Covington lost 4-2 to undefeated Mack Lewnes of Cornell in a second sudden victory round in the quarterfinals. This year, he will face No. 5 Christopher Henrich of Virginia on Friday morning.
Drawing up a pair of top three seeded opponents in the championship bracket, sophomore Mike Mangrum was unable to keep up with top-seeded Kellen Russell of Michigan, falling 15-6, while redshirt freshman Scott Sakaguchi was unable to score against third-seeded Kevin LeValley of Bucknell in an 8-0 major decision. Mangrum will wrestle Anwar Goeres of Binghamton, while Sakaguchi will face Justin Gaethje of Northern Colorado on Friday.
In the consolation bracket portion, senior Brice Arand recorded his second fastest fall of the season in 1:33 over Jonathan Velazquez of Gardner-Webb. Arand contained Velazquez quickly, barely keeping him in bounds and scoring three quick back points. After resetting, Arand turned Velazquez for his 20th career pin, ninth of the season, to continue action into Friday morning's session against No. 6 Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa.
On the mat next to Arand, Hanke got off to just as hot of a start against Caylor Williams of UNC Greensboro, leading 4-0 going into the second period but building his lead to 13-2 heading into the final pair of minutes – accumulating most of the lead off back points. Hanke closed the match in just 6:13 of wrestling with a 20-4 technical fall. He will face No. 9 Sonny Yohn of Minnesota next.
Juniors Jason Lara and Garrett Drucker had their tournament run cut short, drawing a pair of top eight seeds in the opening matches. In the wrestleback bouts, both were unable to score more than an escape point en route to a pair of decisions. Lara fell to Brad Pataky of Penn State, 6-1, while Drucker came up short after a late takedown against Ian Paddock of Ohio State, 3-1.
Covington led a trio of Beaver wrestlers in advancing in the championship bracket in the first session of the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday morning in the Wells Fargo Center. The Beavers were in 14th at the end of the morning session.
While both junior Clayton Jack and Sakaguchi both tallied wins in their first matches of the day, Mangrum guaranteed a continuance in the championship bracket with a dominating performance in his first match of the day at 141 pounds.
Mangrum jumped out of the gates with a quick takedown of Vicente Varela of Hofstra, recording nearly three minutes of riding time, to win in a 9-3 decision.
Sakaguchi chalked up his second victory of the morning session over Cole Dallaserra of Wyoming, who had previously won 5-3 in the two wrestlers' first meeting on Dec. 16. Sakaguchi opened with an early takedown, allowing Dallaserra to tie at two all, but battling back for the go-ahead takedown to win 4-2.
Covington followed suit with the Beavers' first bonus point victory of the day, routing Mike Dessino of Bloomington in an 18-6 major decision.
Despite the remaining five wrestlers moving down to the wrestleback bracket, they didn't give up any bonus points to their opponents.
