The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked sixth in the nation, tallied another big score on the road finishing second at the IGI Chicago Style Invitational with a score of 196.350. The Beavers beat No. 10 UCLA (196.300) just two weeks after a narrow miss at home, and fell just short of No. 2 Stanford's score of 196.475. Leslie Mak led the Beavers with a third place finish in the all-around at 39.250.
"I'm extremely happy with the performances we've put up lately. We've had an odd schedule so far with short weeks and early starts and this team has continued to succeed despite those obstacles as well as a continuously changing lineup," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We're looking forward to a bye this week so we can get back to the gym to work on some little things before we get back into competition in a couple weeks with the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational."
OSU, after receiving the home team rotation in a random draw, began the meet with a solid, but not spectacular, rotation on the vault. Britney Ranzy and Kelsi Blalock highlighted the rotation with matching scores of 9.875, posting the second-highest vault scores of the night. Becky Colvin scored 9.825 and Makayla Stambaugh and Leslie Mak added scores of 9.775 and 9.725 respectively.
Trailing early with UCLA in first at 49.275 to OSU's 49.075, the Beavers headed for the uneven bars. Stephanie McGregor, who opened the meet with a fall on the vault, came back on the bars with a 9.725 to set the tone. Brittany Harris followed with a 9.775 and Jen Kesler posted a season-high of 9.875. Stambaugh added a 9.85 and Mak performed a beautiful 9.90 routine to tie for the event title. Olivia Vivian's first fall of the season left the Beavers with a team score of 49.125 and closed the gap putting all three teams within one-tenth of each other.
Moving to the balance beam the Beavers were still looking to make a move and a team score of 48.925 put them in second place, sliding past the Bruins 147.125-147.000. In the rotation, Kesler led the Beavers with a team-high 9.825. Mak and Blalock notched scores of 9.80 and Melanie Jones, Harris and Vivian added 9.75 routines.
The Beavers headed to the floor exercise needing a big performance to catch the Cardinal, who were more than three-tenths ahead at 147.500. The OSU floor team, which had its entire arsenal available for Chaplin to choose from for the first time this season, responded by tying its season-high of 49.225. Jones and Stambaugh performed beautiful routines to tally back-to-back scores of 9.875. Ranzy tied her career-high with a 9.85 and Mak added a 9.825 while Blalock and Vivian posted matching scores of 9.80.
Oregon State has a bye this week but returns to the competition floor at Gill Coliseum Friday, Feb. 25, for the 31st annual Salbasgeon Suites Invitational when it hosts Washington, San Jose State and UC Davis at 7 p.m.
