LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Oregon State wrestlers Mike Mangrum, Taylor Meeks and Clayton Jack were perfect Friday in the first day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The trio will advance to the semifinals of their respective weight classes on Saturday.
Overall, after one day of competition, OSU has eight of its 10 entrants still alive for at least a third-place finish. As a team, Oregon State is fifth with 56.5 points, 1 ½ points shy of No. 4 Wyoming. Ohio State leads, followed by Michigan and Cornell.
Both Mangrum (141 pounds) and Jack (heavyweight) went 3-0 while Meeks went 2-0 after earning a bye early on. Mangrum outscored his opponents, 46-14, picking up two major decisions in the process. He will open Saturday against Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov.
Jack capped off his day with a fall in 2:37 against Boise State's J.T. Felix, facing the Bronco wrestler for the second time in two weeks. It was his second fall of the day at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and he'll square off with No. 11 seed Atticus Disney of Cal Poly. Jack came in as the No. 2 seed.
Meeks, meanwhile, impressed as a redshirt freshman, winning 6-4 in overtime over Andrew Campollata of Ohio State to cement semifinal status. Meeks, the No. 4 seed at 197 pounds, opens Saturday against No. 1 seed Christopher Honeycutt from Edinboro.
Five other Beavers are in the consolation brackets and could finish as high as third. Pat Rollins lost his first bout at 125 pounds, but went on a 3-bout winning streak to advance to day two.
Garrett Drucker wrestled for the first time this season at 133 pounds and picked up two straight victories - a decision and technical fall - before losing to Michigan's Zachery Stevens, 6-3.
Scott Sakaguchi nearly advanced to the semifinals but dropped a 4-2 bout to Utah Valley's Josh Wilson, 4-2, in a sudden victory period at 149 pounds. He opened the day with a major decision and a decision to put his record at 10-0 before the loss.
RJ Pena was unseeded to start the day and downed George Ivanov (Boise State) before defeating North Idaho's Ryan Zumwalt. He, however, lost to North Dakota's Steven Monk in an attempt to advance to the semifinals at 157.
Ty Vinson came away with two consecutive victories after starting the day 1-1 at 174 pounds. He opened the day with a 23-second fall over Air Force's Clayton Gable, the earliest by any Oregon State wrestler this season.
Two other Beavers, Cody Weishoff (165 pounds) and John Tuck (184 pounds) finished the day at 0-2 and will not compete on Saturday.
Day two of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational takes place on Saturday, where the winners at each bout will be decided. Follow via a live chat on intermatwrestle.com where an updated bracket is also available.
