LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Mike Mangrum and Clayton Jack won their respective weights at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday to pace the Oregon State wrestling team. Mangrum was also announced as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament in going 5-0.
Jack also went 5-0, claiming his championship victory in the heavyweight class with a fall nine seconds prior to the end of the third period. Down 4-3, he tied Ohio State's Peter Capone with a stalling call, then pinned his opponent for the victory. He improved to 13-0 this season.
Mangrum also went 5-0 but didn't win his title in as near dramatic fashion. He did, however, win convincingly enough to be named the top wrestler at the two-day event. He opened Saturday's 141 bracket with a 4-3 win over Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov, then defeated Hunter Stieber from Ohio State, 6-3. Mangrum is 13-0 this season as well.
Three other Beavers finished in the top eight to cap a successful trip for OSU. RJ Pena (157) and Taylor Meeks (197) both took fifth while Scott Sakaguchi (149) finished his trip seventh.
Pena went 3-1 on Saturday to finish 5-2 over the two days. He capped his day with a win over another Ohio State wrestler, Josh Demas, via fall at 2:28. He is now 12-4 on the year.
Meeks went 1-2 on Saturday but clinched his fifth-place finish when he defeated Drexel's Brandon Palik via a major decision, 12-2. Meeks came into the tournament 9-0 on the year and went 3-2 over the two days.
Sakaguchi capped off Oregon State's top eight finishes, taking seventh at 149 pounds. He defeated North Carolina's Jonathan Burns to start the day, and lost to Ohio State's Cam Tessari before pinning Hofstra's Justin Accordino in 1:38 in his final bout of the day. Sakaguchi went 4-2 on his two-day trip and is 12-2 on the season.
Three other Beavers also wrestled on Saturday - Pat Rollins (125), Garrett Drucker (133) and Ty Vinson (174) - but were downed in their only bouts of the day and did not place.
Oregon State returns to dual action next weekend when the Beavers visit Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday and Cal Poly on Sunday.
