2002—Jonathan officially joined the Oregon State coaching staff as a graduate assistant working with the offense under Dennis Erickson in April 2002.
2003—Jonathan was retained by Mike Riley as a graduate assistant on offense. Jonathan coaches the OSU quarterbacks, along with Riley.
PREP ATHLETIC RECORD: Jonathan was Glendora (CA) High School's starting quarterback for three years (1994-96). He was a second-team all-league (Baseline) quarterback as a sophomore and he was a first-team all-league pick as a junior and senior. He was selected as the league MVP his senior year, plus he was a first-team All-Inland Valley pick, a second-team All-San Gabriel Valley choice and a first-team All-CIF (Division IV) pick. He also earned two letters in baseball as a pitcher and infielder. Jonathan earned second-team all-league honors in baseball (pitcher) as a junior and first-team as a senior. In his prep football career, Jonathan completed 324 of 588 passes for 5,532 yards and 39 touchdowns and was intercepted 23 times.
COLLEGE ATHLETIC RECORD: Jonathan started 38 career games for Oregon State at quarterback and produced a 24-14 (.632) record as a starter. Smith completed his four-year career with the Beavers in possession of seven school records. Jonathan established a single-game OSU record by passing for 469 yards vs. Washington in 1998. Smith's 459 yards in total offense vs. the Huskies is still the second best one-game mark in OSU history, topped only by Erik Wilhelm's 480 yards in 1987. Jonathan completed 638 of 1,261 passes for 9,680 yards, 55 touchdowns and 29 interceptions in his OSU career. He produced 9,209 yards of total offense in 41 career games played. Jonathan holds career records at OSU for passing yardage (9,680), for total offense (9,209 yards) and for touchdown passes (55). He holds three season records—most yards passing, 3053 in 1999; most yards total offense, 2,957 in 1999 and most touchdown passes, 20 in 1999. He passed for over 300 yards in 11 of his 41 games played and over 200 yards 29 times. His first three 300-yard games were coming off the bench as a backup in 1998. His 15 TD passes in 1999 ranks fourth on the single-season list. Jonathan finished third on the Pacific-10 Conference career total offense and career passing charts. Jonathan completed his career ranked 20th on the NCAA career passing chart. He finished 31st on the NCAA career total offense chart. He was OSU's starting quarterback in 2000 when the Beavers recorded the best season in school history at 11-1. OSU shared the 2000 Pac-10 championship, defeated Notre Dame 41-9 to win the Fiesta Bowl and ranked fourth on the final AP poll.
EDUCATION: Graduated from Glendora High School in Glendora, CA in 1997. Graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in liberal studies in December of 2001.
PERSONAL: Full name Jonathan Charles Smith. Jonathan is married to the former Candice Huddle. They were married in Corvallis on July 12, 2002.
