CORVALLIS -
The Oregon State gymnastics team entertained several hundred fans Tuesday night when the Beavers hosted the annual Black and Orange Exhibition at Gill Coliseum.
"I'm pleased with the results tonight," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "It's always good to get out in front of the crowd. It's an opportunity that we can't duplicate at practice and puts extra pressure to hit routines. We walked away from tonight healthy and that's the most important thing and our freshmen have a little experience now too."
The meet, which was free of admission and concluded with autographs from the entire squad, also included comments from Chaplin, who gave the crowd a short lesson in gymnastics and basics of what judges watch for on each event.
The Beavers remained as a single team performing one event at a time until the fourth and final rotation when four extra balance beam performers were sprinkled in among the floor exercise competitors. In all, 10 OSU gymnasts performed beam routines with all 10 "hitting" their routines.
Leslie Mak and Makayla Stambaugh were the lone all-around competitors while a quartet of OSU veterans made appearances on three events. Olivia Vivian, who was ranked No. 1 in the nation on the uneven bars for much of last season, posted the highest score of the night on the bars drawing raves from assistant coach John Carney.
Oregon State, which has reached the NCAA Championships each of the last six seasons and finished eighth each of the last two, will open the 2012 season at home Jan. 13 when the Beavers host Big 12 power Oklahoma.
