CORVALLIS, Ore. - It was a record day on Saturday for the Oregon State women's golf team as they shot a school-best 2-under 282 in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif., and moved up six spots heading into Sunday's final round.
"It was great to set a new school record," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "We are very excited with everyone's performance today. They stayed with their game plan and finished very well. We are young, but very talented, and today was an indication of how good we can be. I am very proud of all of them."
The Beavers got a career-best 3-under 68 from sophomore Seshia Telles, a 1-under 70 from sophomore Lauren Sewell, an even-par 71 from freshman Anica Yoo and a 2-over 73 from senior Whitney French to record a 2-under 282, which is two strokes better than the previous school-record of an even-par 284 at the Peg Barnard Collegiate in Palo Alto, Calif., in the spring of 2007.
Oregon State was tied for 14th place after shooting a 9-over 293 on Friday at the par-71, 6,148-yard Stanford Golf Course in the opening round, but moved up to eighth place in the 16-team field after its record-breaking round on Saturday at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Telles opened the second round on the 10th hole and had birdies on the par-4 10th, par-4 11th, par-5 16th, par-3 third and par-5 seventh holes to post a collegiate best 3-under 68, which is three strokes better than her previous career-best of a 1-under 71 at the UNLV Spring Invitational last season.
Sewell followed up an even-par 71 on Friday with a 1-under 70 on Saturday and sits in a tie for 18th place with a 1-under 141. Telles is tied for 23rd with an even-par 142, while Yoo, who had five birdies on Saturday, is tied for 36th with a 2-over 144 and French is tied for 59th with a 6-over 148.
