OREGON CITY, Ore. – The Oregon State women's cross country team won the Clackamas CC Mike Hodges Invitational today with 19 team points, beating out the other 10 schools competing in the meet.
“Overall, I was really pleased with the performance today,” Head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “We didn't race our top five today, so it was really good to see how the ladies competed. It would have been nice to see a legitimate 5,000 meter course, but they still got personal records even though it was longer. So it was good.”
The Mike Hodges Invitational always brings good competition to its meet and this year is no different. Teams that competed this year with the Beavers included Seattle University, Clackamas CC, Clark College, Everett CC, Highline CC, McMurry University, Mt. Hood CC, Willamette University and the University of Washington.
Sullivan is familiar with several of the teams competing because of his ties to Willamette University and Clackamas CC.
“Clackamas CC is where I first went to college and ran,” Sullivan said. “It is also where I got my coaching career started, so it is always fun for me personally to back there. Willamette University is my other alma mater and my last coaching stop prior to Oregon State.”
The overall winner from today's meet was Erin Johnson from the University of Washington. She finished the course in a time of 17:48. The times in the race today are slower than a normal 5,000 meter course due to the lead bike taking the runners off course for around 40 extra meters during the race.
Erin Jones led the way for the Beavers today finishing second overall and first for Oregon State. She finished with a time of 18:06.
“This is the first year that Erin has been able to finish a cross country season,” Sullivan said. “Her freshman year, she got hurt after her first meet and last year she got an injury too. So her goal this fall has been to stay healthy and she has done a really good job in managing her training. She has been doing a wonderful job this fall.”
Olivia Poblacion finished fourth overall and second for the Beavers finishing with a time of 18:12. Not far behind Poblacion was freshman Kelsi Schaer finishing fifth overall and third for Oregon State. She finished with a time of 18:14.
Aly Nielson finished in eighth place overall and fourth for Oregon State finishing with a time of 18:25. Emily Wheeler finished 11th overall and fifth for the Beavers finishing with a time of 18:37. Marsha Lampi rounded out the Beavers that scored points today finishing 16th overall and in sixth for the Beavers. She finished with a time of 18:54.
The Beavers will return to action when they get to run at home in Corvallis as them compete at the OSU Beaver Classic. Although the meet is in Corvallis, it will be hosted by the Corvallis Running Club. The women's race is set to start at 9:45 a.m.
