EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon State women's cross country team competed Saturday in the sixth annual Bill Dellinger Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon at the Springfield Country Club. The Beavers finished fourth overall with 118 points.
The distance at the Bill Dellinger Invitational changed from a 6,000 meter race, to a 5,000 meter race this year. The race was ran mostly on the fairways of the golf course on the back nine holes and consisted of three relatively flat loops--an outer loop, an inner loop, and a finish loop.
Senior Laura Carlyle led the way for the Beavers in her first race of the 2011 season as she placed 11th overall in the women's 5K with a time of 16:59.35 and an average mile of 5:28.10.
"It was an overall good day," head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "We ran Laura and Casey for the first time so they both ran really well and both know they can do a lot better, so they are both excited. We have held them both back for the last month or so, so there is definitely a lot left in the tank.”
Casey Masterson finished 19th overall and second for the Beavers with a time of 17:12.61. Audrey Botti finished 28th overall and third for the Beavers with a time of 17:29.84. Chloe Steinbeck, a former Duck, finished 34th overall and fourth for the Beavers finishing with a time of 17:43.04.
“Audrey ran very well today again,” Sullivan said. “And that was a personal record for her. All of those times for Laura and Casey and pretty much the group. We know we have more work to do, but we are excited to see what we can do over the next five or six weeks.”
Freshman Kinsey Gomez rounded out the top five for the Beavers finishing 36th overall behind Steinbeck with a time of 17:44.55. Freshman Kelsi Schaer ran unattached for the Beavers and finished 48th with a time of 17:58.63. Freshman Aly Nielson finished 59th with a time of 18:12.97.
“Kelsi, Kinsey and Aly all ran really well today,” Sullivan said. “They are progressing and especially with the first week of class, that can always be a little extra stressful. So I am excited about their progress and they are excited about how well they are doing.”
Erin Jones and Olivia Poblacion finished right after the other finishing seventh and eighth for the Beavers. Jones finished with a time of 18:05.59 and Poblacion finished with a time of 18:06.37.
The Beavers return to action Friday Oct. 14 when they compete at the Clackamas Community College Mike Hodges Invitational in Oregon City, Ore. After the Clackamas CC Invitational, the Beavers will only have one more meet before they compete at the Pac-12 Championships in Phoenix, Ariz.
