Oregon State vs. Charlotte
November 24, 2010
Gill Coliseum
Corvallis, Ore.
Head Coach Craig Robinson
On the play of the team ...
"It was a great overall team effort. As I said before the game we have to learn to play with a lead. I thought we learned something tonight. We found a player in Devon Collier and Ahmad Starks is going to be good, too. As we've tried to get things across to these guys, it's starting to sink in. They're starting to get a little bit of confidence and we needed a game like this."
On the play of Calvin Haynes ...
"Calvin hasn't been pleased with the way he's been playing. He's poised to really do this on a regular basis for us so he's been in the gym working and getting extra shots up, doing what he needs to do. All we told him is to stick with it and not take so many bad shots. I think the difference between the Calvin you saw tonight and what you've seen in past games is that every single shot, except that fast one, was a very good shot; not just a good shot but a very good shot for us. He had two turnovers in the first half that might be my fault because I was riding him because he was hot and he got fatigued and that's when you make those types of mistakes. I couldn't have been happier with the way he bounced back in the second half."
On reducing the number of turnovers ...
"It was exactly what had happened in the last two games where we get to a high single-digit lead, eight or nine points, and you want to get it over in the double-digits and you make those critical errors. Not only do you not get the points, but you feel demoralized and I thought we bounced back from a lot of potentially demoralizing plays. That's why you end up winning the game like this."
On Oregon State's defense ...
"The one thing we know is that our 1-3-1 is as good as it's ever been in this early stanza of the year. We aren't normally this good on defense this early and a lot of that has to do with Omari (Johnson) at the top but also a lot of it has to do with the fact that we're rebounding better this year out of the 1-3-1 and that's a hard zone to rebound out of."
Senior guard Calvin Haynes
On the energy of the team tonight ...
"We've been playing like this. It was one of those games we needed to get off our back. We needed to get this win, going on the road to (Washington) D.C. with a business trip like mindset. This is game that we needed to finish as a team. We had a great week of practice to prepare so it finally came out in the game."
On his individual performance ...
"I felt good because all of the work I've been putting in and it finally showed off. It was one of those games when the ball went through the net and I just went with it."
On playing with leads and holding the lead ...
"Coach (Robinson) said it was going to be a test for us. This is a very good team. We just came out with a lot more fire. All week in practice, he was saying that we need to grind it out. That we've played with leads and lost. This is one of those games that we wanted to come in and get a lead and keep a lead and finish out the game."
Freshman forward Devon Collier
On putting the game out of reach compared to the past two games ...
"We just have to rebound and stop the turnovers. In the first half, we had six turnovers and we only had four turnovers in the second half. If we can limit our turnovers, we will do well in the game."
On getting his first career start ...
"I was pumped up and excited. The adrenaline was rushing through me so through the first five minutes I got tired. I just want to help the team win."
