Honolulu, Hawai'i – Despite outscoring Hawai'i (2-1) in the second half, the Oregon State women's basketball team (3-1) couldn't overcome an 11-point first half deficit as the Beavers had to count their first loss of the season in a 54-49 decision.
But the team earned the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic title allowing the least amount of points scored against it. Freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Bostick earned six points with five assists and a steal, while redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) earning a team-high 11 points with three steals and five rebounds. Senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) earned five of the team's 12 steals, while junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) pulled down a team-best six boards.
Hawai'i took control of the first half early, opening up with a pair of threes by Megan Tinnin despite a pair of buckets by sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.) and Bostick.
The Rainbow Wahine followed up with a 9-2 run between breaks before Oregon State began its 7-0 run led by Marchbank's five points, capped by a freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) three-point bucket to bring the Beavers back within two at 19-21.
But the Beavers couldn't answer a nine-point surge by Hawai'i to end the half with the Rainbow Wahine leading 30-19 going into the break.
The two teams battled back and forth to start the final 20 minutes with Hawai'i building its lead to as many as 15 early with the Beavers chipping away at that lead to 11 at the second media timeout.
Freshman Classye James (Palo Alto, Calif.) stepped up the intensity, earning her three points on four free throws, while holding Hawai'i to just a pair before the next long break with Indendi making it a seven-point game at 37-44.
The Beavers continued to claw their way back into the game, cutting the Rainbow Wahine's lead to four at the final long break before Oregon State was able to make it three with just under a minute left to play.
Bailed out with the shot clock running down, Hawai'i's Breanna Arbuckle sank a pair of free throws to take a five point lead that would hold despite a pair of three-point attempts by Indendi.
The Rainbow Wahine was led by Arbuckle with a game-high 13 points with Shawna-Lei Kuehu grabbing 12 boards.
Oregon State heads to the Hyatt Place Lady Rebel Round-Up next, facing the host, UNLV, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
