Corvallis, Ore. - Freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) posted a stellar night with a match-high 10 kills and five blocks, but the Oregon State volleyball team (8-21, 1-14) fell in three (25-22, 25-19, 25-17) to No. 6 USC (23-4, 12-4) on Friday evening.
"USC is a good team," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "They're a strong hitting team. We kept a couple of their hitters below their hitting numbers, but .we couldn't stop their middles blocking-wise. But we had too many unforced errors on our side. They scored 51 points, and we scored 49. That means that all the other points they're getting are unforced errors on our part. We've got to get better hitting on the outside for us. Mona Kressl had a great match - certainly was our player of the match, and Martie Massey did a great job in the backcourt."
Kressl hit .353 on 17 total swings, while senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) posted nine kills with junior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) counting eight. Sawatzky also added an ace, five digs and two blocks, while freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) dug a team-high six balls with an ace.
Sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) also had a team-high tying six digs and two blocks.
USC's Alex Jupiter led the Women of Troy offensively with 10 kills, while setter Kendall Bateman had six digs.
Oregon State hosts No. 10 UCLA in its final home match of the season on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Following competition, seniors Kaitlan Locke, Kiersten Sambrailo and Jill Sawatzky will be honored.
