Corvallis, Ore. – Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) and junior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) both posted double-doubles for the second consecutive match, but it wasn't enough to top Arizona State with the Beavers losing in five (25-12, 28-26, 9-25, 17-25, 10-15) on Saturday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum.
Sawatzky killed a match-high 21 sets, while digging up a team-high 14 balls. And Shaw killed 16, adding 12 digs.
“I give Arizona State a lot of credit for hanging in there,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “They really played well starting at the end of the second set, carrying it through. We didn't have much of an answer for a couple of their hitters. It's tough when you get into a spell when you're not winning – our confidence shattered a bit. On a positive note, we passed well in the beginning.”
Oregon State (8-12, 1-5 Pac-10) quickly cruised to a set one win, collecting 16 kills, led by Shaw's four. The Beavers capitalized on Arizona State's six unforced errors, while stopping the ball at the net three times with freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) involved in each block.
The second set opened with the Beavers taking the first point. After nine tie scores and four lead changes, Oregon State took the extra point set win to go up 2-0 on the Sun Devils after they tried to creep back in late in the set.
The Sun Devils (6-11, 1-4 Pac-10) stole the momentum coming out of the long break to tie up the match at two sets each to force a deciding set five. Arizona State came out firing and took the final set to take the match.
Freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) earned 12 digs, while Kressl led the defense at the net with eight blocks, including one solo.
Arizona State's Sarah Reaves led all hitters and passers with 21 kills and 20 digs with libero Sarah Johnson also tallying 20 digs. Erica Wilson had a team-high five blocks.
Oregon State heads to Eugene next for the first installment of the 2010 Civil War Series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in McArthur Court.
Oregon State Notes – Junior Dre Shaw earned her second career double-double, second of the weekend, with 16 kills and 12 digs … Senior Jill Sawatzky tallied her second double-double of the weekend, eighth of the season with 21 kills and 14 digs … Sophomore Megan McBride is now 10th all-time for career assists with 819.
