Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) set a new career-high for kills with 11, while hitting .348, but it wasn't enough for the Oregon State volleyball team (8-15, 1-8) to top No. 8 USC (17-3, 6-3), falling in three (24-26, 20-25, 16-25) at the Galen Center Saturday evening.
"We started off well and blocked well," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "We tried a new line-up with Jill Sawatzky playing opposite, and I think it's something we're going to look at carefully in the next week. We passed the ball well, so we kept ourselves in a good offensive pattern. They're a very good sideout team, and we sided out well in the first two sets before dropping off in the third. It was a good attacking game by Ashley Eneliko, Mona Kressl and Megan McBride."
Eneliko also provided the team's top defense at the net with three blocks. Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) added eight kills, while freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) racked up 11 digs.
The Beavers got off to a hot start leading the Women of Troy by as many as six at the 14-8 mark. Oregon State held USC to only sideout points for nearly a full rotation before the Women of Troy were able to string together short three-point runs. But it was enough as USC took the lead at 23-22, only allowing the Beavers to tie the set as the Women of Troy took the early 1-0 advantage.
After trading four lead changes with eight tie scores, the Beavers fell behind after the 10-point mark despite more solid hitting by middles freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) and Eneliko. USC capitalized on Oregon State's nine unforced errors to win set two.
Coming out of the long break, the Beavers were unable to get into a rhythm as it hit .051 with only 10 kills, while the Women of Troy hit .344 with 15 kills. USC was led overall by Alex Jupiter with 16 kills, while libero Natalie Hagglund added 12 digs.
Oregon State returns home to legendary Gill Coliseum to host No. 5 California on Friday and No. 2 Stanford on Sunday.
Oregon State Notes - Senior Jill Sawatzky is now fourth all-time for career kills with 1,368 ... Sophomore Ashley Eneliko set a new career-high for kills with 11; set a new best hitting percentage .348.
