Corvallis, Ore. - Junior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) and sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) led the Beavers with .625 and .385 hitting percentages, but the Oregon State volleyball team (8-16, 1-9 Pac-10) fell to No. 3 California (19-1, 9-1 Pac-10) in three on Friday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum.
Set scores were 26-28, 22-25, 19-25.
"The key to this match was the first set," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "It was there to win. We were ahead 24-22 in that set and then we had several serves for set point. We have to put them away, and then it's a different game. We still had opportunities after that. It was kind of a sporadic game from both sides. We hit really well - at the end of the second set we were hitting 30 percent as a team. That's as well as we've hit in the Pac-10 this year. We had some really good hitting performances. Dre Shaw and Ashley Eneliko both had good numbers."
Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) recorded her 17th double-digit kills match with a team-leading 11, adding two service aces and eight digs. Shaw and freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) backed her up with eight kills each.
Oregon State led through most of the first set, out killing the Golden Bears 21-17 behind Kressl's six to reach set point first. After 13 tie scores and four lead changes, the Golden Bears came back to tie up the set before taking the 1-0 advantage. Cal continued its momentum to take the final pair of sets for the win with only three more tie scores and a pair of lead changes - both coming in the second set.
Shaw guided the defense with a match-high 12 digs. At the net, three Beaver blockers recorded a pair of block assists each.
The Golden Bears' Tarah Murrey paced all hitters with 14 kills, while libero Robin Rostratter had a team-high eight digs.
