Los Angeles, Calif. – Junior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) hammered a team-high 13 kills, but the Oregon State volleyball team fell in four (13-25, 23-25, 25-23, 14-25) to No. 11 UCLA on Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion.
“We had chances in that match particularly at the end of the second set,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We needed to do a better job blocking in certain situations, especially on their left-side hitters. Our passing broke down in the first and fourth set, which really hurt us. But Ashley Eneliko had a good hitting match. Megan McBride was good attacking, and Kaitlan Locke came in and did a good job setting. Also, Becky Defoe did a good job at libero. We're still waiting for a match when we put everything together with all the people playing.”
Sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) earned the second-most kills with eight, while freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) held down the backcourt with 12 digs. Freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) blocked a match-high seven balls to lead the team's eight total team blocks.
After a tough first set, the Beavers rebounded in the second set, counting an ace and 11 kills, while capitalizing on 11 Bruin unforced errors. Tying the set at 17 all, Oregon State fell behind coming back within one at the 22-23 mark, prompting a UCLA timeout. But coming out of the break, UCLA found the final pair of points to take the 2-0 lead.
The two teams traded sideout points to start the third set with Oregon State reaching 15 first, leading by three, after a Kressl solo block. The Beavers added three more big blocks, coupled with kills from Shaw, Eneliko and Kressl to close UCLA's advantage to 2-1.
But the Bruins hit .464 with 16 kills en route to taking the match in four. UCLA's Rachael Kidder led all hitters with 23 kills, while libero Lainey Gera had a match-high 17 digs.
Oregon State closes out the trip in Los Angeles at No. 8 USC on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
