AUBURN, Wash. - The Oregon State women's golf team defeated Portland State in a two-team tournament Sunday at the Washington National Individual Championship.
The Beavers shot a 309 at the par-72, 6,288-yard Washington National Golf Club, while Portland State finished seven strokes back at 316. The tournament was delayed an hour due to frost on the course.
"We feel that today was successful in that we got experience on the course the NCAA West Regional will be played in the spring," Oregon State women's head coach Risë Alexander said. "It is a great venue and there are many holes that present distinct course management for each player. So the extra experience we gained today will benefit us in the spring."
Freshman Seshia Telles shot a 2-over 74 to tie for medalist honors with Tiffany Schoning of Portland State. Freshman Lauren Sewell shot a 4-over 76 to finish fourth, junior Whitney French was tied for seventh with a 78 and junior Elyse Okada was 11th with an 81.
Sophomore Chelsey Lind and freshman Melissa Gibbons competed as individuals and shot 82 and 84, respectively.
"I was very impressed with Seshia and her continued consistent play," Alexander said. "We definitely had the chance to practice some of our new mental toughness drills we have been working on with our sports psychologist Glen Albaugh."
The Beavers return to action Nov. 5-7 at the Pac-10/SEC Challenge at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
