OXFORD, Miss. -- Cara Freeman finished in fifth-place, shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the final round of the Lady Rebel Intercollegiate on Sunday to lead the Oregon State women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Country Club of Oxford a par-72 6,132 yard course.
"Cara played a very steady tournament and hit some great shots,” head coach Rise Lakowske said. “Overall, this was some of the best play she's had this spring in regards to three consistent rounds where she was consistently 'right there' with everybody at the top of the leaderboard." Freeman's fifth-place finish came after rounds of 76, 73 and 73 en route to a tournament total 222, just five shots back from tournament champion Dori Carter of Mississippi. The Beavers shot rounds of 311, 297 and a final round score of 304 for a tournament total 912. The only teams finishing above the Beavers were tournament champion and No. 34 Tulane shooting a 889 and tournament host and runner-up No. 34 Mississippi shooting a 901. "We played okay today. It was something of an average round. Overall, we played a pretty decent tournament. The most important thing we got out of this tournament is that this course is very hilly and has a number of deceiving holes that are very similar to Stanford's golf course where Pac-10s will be played. This was good preparation for that." Whitney French shot a 229 for the tournament tying for 17th, tying a career best finish and career low score for 54-holes. Other Oregon State scores included Lauren Archer shooting a 231 finishing 23rd, Elyse Okada tied for 29th with a 234 and Martha Burkard tied for 40th with a 239. Oregon State will be back in action Apr. 24-26 in Palo Alto, Calif. for the Pacific-10 Championship. Team Scores: 1. Tulane (300-295-294) 889; 2. Mississippi (307-306-288) 901; 3.
