Kiawah Island, S.C. – Oregon State women's golf is in a tie for 22nd of 43 after 18 holes of the three day, three round Edwin Watts/ Kiawah Island Classic.
Sophomore Cara Freeman led the Beavers with a 5-over-par, 77, leaving her in a tie for 35th in the 215 golfer field.
“Cara played pretty well today. She had a couple holes that cost her a couple strokes, but she was striking the ball well today and converted some very nice up-and-downs,” head coach Rise Lakowske said.
The event features a unique format where each team will play both the Cougar Point and Oak Point golf courses on Sunday and Monday with the top 22 teams playing for the tournament championship on Tuesday after two rounds play. The tournament championship round will be played at Cougar Point and the remaining 21 teams will play Oak Point for a flight championship.
The Beavers are currently at the tournament championship cut line after shooting a team score of 31-over-par, 319, on the par 72, 6,009 yard Cougar Point golf course in windy conditions that saw gusts up to 20 miles-per-hour.
“We played pretty well on the front nine today, but didn't take advantage of our opportunities on the back,” Lakowske said. “We didn't play up to our capabilities today, but we have some things we can build on for tomorrow's round at Oak Point.”
Junior Lauren Archer and freshman Elyse Okada each finished day one in the top 100 each shooting an 8-over-par 80 to tie for 84th.
Stephanie Connelly of Central Florida leads the tournament after shooting a 2-under-par, 70 on the Cougar Point course. Leading the team scoring is Miami and East Tennessee State each shooting a 12-over-par 300 at Cougar Point.
Oregon State returns to action tomorrow morning at the par-72, 5,907 yard Oak Point course with the first team time at 7:25 a.m. PST.
