Beavers Win Two Of Three At OWC Duals

REDMOND, Ore. - Oregon State heavyweight Ty Watterson won both his matches and recorded his team-high fourth pin of the year as the Beavers won two of their three meets Friday at the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. OSUtook a 23-21 win over Southern Oregon, the nation's ninth-ranked NAIA team; topped Portland State 33-12 in a Pacific-10 dual; and lost 29-6 to Augsburg, the nation's top-ranked NCAA Division III team.
OSU (4-3 overall, 2-0 Pacific-10) will return home for a Pac-10 dual against Cal Poly on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.
Watterson, ranked 16th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and 13th by InterMat, pinned PSU's Steve Fittinger in 2:28 and later won a decision against Augsburg to improve his record to 10-1 this season. Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis, the defending Pac-10 champion at 165 pounds, saw his first action of the season in an 11-4 decision over Portland State's A.J. Lawrence.
The Beavers had to rally to beat Southern Oregon in their first dual of the day. OSU won the last three matches and needed a pin from 125-pounder Eric Stevenson and technical fall from 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs in the final matches for the decisive points. Stevenson also had a technical fall against PSU.
The loss to Augsburg marked the Auggies' second win of the day over a Pac-10 team, as they had earlier beaten Cal Poly 25-15.
