CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior post Brina Chaney scored a career-high 31 points and was a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line as Oregon State's women's basketball team topped University of Oregon by a 75-61 margin in Saturday's Civil War.
Oregon State (12-9; 6-6 Pac-10) sprinted out of the gates, building an early 10-0 lead as Oregon (11-11; 3-9 Pac-10) missed its first five field goal attempts and didn't get onto the scoreboard until Andrea Bills hit a lay-up at the 15:39 mark.
Back-to-back 3-point field goals from Shannon Howell and Mandy Close gave OSU an even greater cushion at 16-2.
The Beavers continued to pour it on, as a jumper from Chaney with just under five minutes in the half sparked a 6-0 Oregon State run giving OSU a 33-16 lead.
A 3-point field goal from Brandi Davis in the closing seconds pulled the Ducks within 33-21 at the break.
Oregon whittled the OSU lead down to nine points (41-32) after five consecutive points from Davis, but that was as close as the Ducks would get for the remainder of the contest.
A 10-0 run late in the game gave the Beavers their largest lead of the night at 73-48 with 3:45 left in the contest. Chaney scored six points during the stretch and poured in 19 second half points before leaving the game to an ovation from the season-high 4,763 fans in attendance.
Oregon scored the final 11 points of the game.
Chaney buried 8-of-13 field goal attempts and her perfect mark (15-for-15) from the free throw line tied the Pacific-10 Conference record set by UCLA All-American Maylana Martin in 1999. The 6-5 senior also matched her career-high with four assists and pulled down eight rebounds in her final Civil War.
"I thought we did a great job working our high-low game," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. "Brina (Chaney) did a great job of getting down low and the other players did a great job of giving her the ball and getting open to take good shots."
Howell finished with 14 points, including a 7-for-8 clip from the free throw line, while senior Krystal Turner added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Oregon State improved to 11-1 on the season when the Beavers have three players reach double figures in scoring.
Davis led three Duck players in double figures with 13 points, but hit only 5-of-15 shots from the field.
Oregon State made 25-of-28 free throws on the night, while Oregon hit 13-of-19 attempts from the line.
Both teams shot nearly identical from the floor - Oregon (22-for-51) and Oregon State (23-for-54).
The Beavers return to action on Thursday night when they host University of Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
