CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior post Brina Chaney led Oregon State in scoring for a third straight game, as the Beavers knocked off Washington State University, 65-55, in Saturday's women's basketball action.
Oregon State improves to 14-9 on the season - its best overall record with four games remaining in Pacific-10 Conference action since the 1995-96 campaign. The Beavers are in sixth place in the Pac-10 with an 8-6 mark, while WSU falls to 5-19 overall and 1-14 in conference action.
Washington State took a 17-13 lead with 9:40 on the clock, before the Beavers reeled off 11 straight points to regain control.
OSU went into the locker room with a 31-24 advantage, but the Cougars opened the second half on a 10-0 run and garnered a 34-31 lead with 16:29 left.
Oregon State responded with seven points from Chaney, coupled with a 3-pointer from Jessica Jones to get the lead back for the remainder of the game.
"We played them very close at their place and didn't get any separation until the last few minutes," said Spoelstra. "It was the same way here, but we're very proud of our players for hanging in there and understanding that it was a game of runs."
Neither team shot well from the field, but Oregon State held a 44-36 rebounding edge and broke the school record with a perfect 17-for-17 mark from the free throw line.
Chaney reached double figures in scoring for the 14th time this season with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Junior guard Shannon Howell also reached double figures with 10 points and six boards. Three other Beavers had nine points - Leilani Estavan, Krystal Turner and Anita Rivera. Sophomore Karen Vickery matched her career-best with five rebounds.
Washington State all-star forward Bianca McCall led all players with 19 points.
Oregon State improved to 13-1 on the season when shooting better than the opposition.
The Beavers head to the desert next week, facing No. 24 University of Arizona on Thursday at 6 p.m. PST, before battling Arizona State on Saturday afternoon. The Beaver-Sun Devil showdown will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net at 1 p.m. PST.
