CORVALLIS, Ore. - Arizona State University used a 19-0 first half run and hit 10 free throws in the final 2:30 to secure a 63-56 victory against Oregon State in Thursday's Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action.
With the victory, the Sun Devils (11-6 overall; 5-3 Pac-10) broke a four-game losing streak against Oregon State (10-7 overall; 4-4 Pac-10) in Corvallis.
OSU pulled in front by a 10-2 margin as ASU managed just one field goal over the first seven minutes of the game, but the Beavers went ice-cold from the floor after that. Arizona State used a 19-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 21-10 with 5:33 left in the half.
The Beavers hit just one field goal over the final 14:12 of the opening frame, but used seven consecutive free throws to close out the half and cut the Sun Devil lead to 30-22 heading into the locker room.
"We came out with some good offense in the first half, but then we got stuck and couldn't find our rhythm," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra.
OSU fought back to grab a 38-37 lead with 11:12 remaining after a pair of baskets by Shannon Howell, but Arizona State responded with a run of its own to regain the lead.
With the score knotted at 46-46 with just under six minutes to play, Sun Devil guard Kylan Loney buried a 22-footer from the top of the key that silenced the Beaver crowd and gave ASU the lead for good.
"Arizona State came out here and made some big shots at the end," said Spoelstra.
Senior post Krystal Turner was the only Oregon State player to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and the line, to go along with five rebounds. Four Beaver players (Brina Chaney, Leilani Estavan, Mandy Close and Howell) added nine points to the mix.
The balanced Sun Devils had four players score in double figures with Kristen Kovesdy's 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting leading the way.
ASU hit 50-percent (21-for-42) of its field goal attempts on the night, while the Beavers managed just 33-percent (20-for-60) shooting.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they host University of Arizona. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
