Beavers Take Care Of Prairie View A&M

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - David Lucas had 16 points as the Oregon State Beavers defeated Prairie View A&M 70-53 Saturday in the opener for both teams.
Oregon State jumped on the Panthers early with a 15-4 opening spurt and led by as many as 21 never relinquishing the lead all night despite a surge by the Panthers which saw the deficit cut to seven points three times.
OSU led 35-22 halftime on the strength of their defense which held Prairie View to just 9-of-27 shooting from the field.
For the game, the Beavers shot 43 percent (26-61) from the field.
Angelo Tsagarakis was was 3-for-4 from 3-point range and wound up with 10 points and Jim Hanchett had eight points and grabbed eight rebounds in their Oregon State debuts.
The Panthers had 25 turnovers and were held by the Beavers to 33 percent shooting for the game.
The Panthers were led by impressive 6-foot-10 freshman forward Tyrone Nelson who had a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds.
OSU has now won seven of its last eight season openers, all at home, and 12 of its last 13 non-conference home games, including the last five. The Beavers next face the University of Portland on Tuesday in Corvallis.
