Women's Basketball Downed By Oregon, 50-48, In WNIT Second Round

Cathrine Kraayeveld scored on a layup with 4.4 seconds remaining as Oregon rallied from 12-points down in the second half to defeat Oregon State 50-48 in a second-round game of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
The Beavers' Juleen Smith had a 3-point attempt fall short as the buzzer sounded, sending the Ducks (19-13) into a quarterfinal game against Pac-10 Conference rival Washington in Seattle on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Huskies defeated Southern California 97-87 on Sunday.
Kraayeveld finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Ducks, who trailed 29-19 at halftime and 31-19 3:30 into the second half, while Shaqaula Williams and Jamie Craighead added 10 points apiece.
Sophomore Hollye Chapman led the Beavers (17-15) with 13 points, while Smith scored 12. First-team all-Pac-10 guard Felica Ragland was held to 11 points, but led all players with 14 rebounds. The double-double was the 18th of Ragland's career and fifth consecutive against Oregon.
It was the Ducks' 13th win in 14 games against their fierce interstate rival, and second this season. It was also the 10th loss for the Beavers in 11 games against Oregon at McArthur Court.
"I thought the momentum was taken away (from us) in the second half by a poor officiating crew," said Oregon State head coach Judy Spoelstra, whose team was held to 19 points in the second half and 23 percent shooting (7-of-30). "I think we we're the better team and we deserved to win."
Oregon State led 48-44 with 4:24 to play in the game but failed to score another point, missing its final five shots and going 0-1 from the foul line. Oregon took advantage, getting baskets inside from Kraayeveld at 2:42 and center Andrea Bills at 1:54 to knot the game at 48.
Both teams traded missed shots on their ensuing possessions, and then the Beavers turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation with 19 seconds left in the game, setting up the Ducks for a last-shot opportunity.
Edniesha Curry got the first chance, missing on a driving layup. Fredrick grabbed the rebound and put up a shot that went over the basket into the waiting arms of Kraayeveld, who laid it up and in for the win.
Oregon shot only 33 percent from the field in the game, including nine percent from the 3-point line, making just 2-of-22 attempts. Oregon State didn't fare any better, making only 32 percent of its shots, including 23 percent in the second half which opened the door for the Ducks comeback.
Down 31-19 with three minutes gone in the second half, Oregon went on a 18-5 run to take a 37-36 lead with 9:25 to play, a stretch sparked when Ragland was called for a technical foul under the Oregon basket that led to a pair of made free throws by Williams and a layup by Bills on the following possession.
The Beavers got the lead back, 44-37, on a 8-0 run of their own.
Oregon State went scoreless for six minutes early in the first half as the Ducks took a 9-2 lead. But from there, it was all Beavers, as Ragland and Smith all 16 of their first-half points in the final 13 minutes as Oregon State outscored Oregon 27-10 to lead 29-19 at halftime.
