CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Led by Anne Walker's 1-under par performance at the par 72 Trysting Tree Golf Course, California owns a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Shanico Invitational women's golf tournament heading into Saturday's final 18 holes.
Oregon State and Northern Arizona are tied at 609, 12 shots off the lead. The Beavers cut 13 shots off their first-round performance with a second round 298.
"We played much better in the second round, and that is what I expected," OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. "We are at a disadvantage in some ways, because we have practiced less than a week. In the second round, we knew the pin placements and that familiarity helped us."
Sophomore Bridget Bieth's second round 72 was the low round of the day for OSU. Bieth is tied for 19th at 152, while Carina Olsson is tied for 13th at 151 after a consistent 77-74 performance.
"Bridget really came back for us in the second 18," Lakowske said. "She made a lot of putts - in fact, she made three birdies in a row, and that obviously helps your score. Carina was steady the entire day, which is what I anticipate I'm going to get from her."
Newcomer Marylyn Brand fired a 153 in her OSU debut to tie for 22nd, while fellow freshman Melanie Furuta shot 159.
Playing as individuals for OSU were Stacie Ferguson and freshman Laura Skinner. Ferguson came in at 161, while Skinner carded a 165 in her first tournament for OSU.
San Francisco, in second place, had two players among the top four, with Lisa Chen shooting 144 and Susannah Laing 145. San Diego State is six shots back in third at 604.
The final 18 holes begin Saturday at 7:30 a.m.
