Men's Varsity Drops OSU Alumni In Soccer Exhibition

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team kicked off their season Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 exhibition victory over the Oregon State alumni team at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The alumni squad consisted of former OSU standouts such as Greg Howes, Josh and Jeremiah Dodson, Sean Young, and Freddie Kumernes.
"This was the first annual game, and we had a great turnout," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "Next year we'll do a golf outing in the morning, and then the game in the afternoon. This was great to get the program going."
Alumni Greg Howes, who graduated from OSU in 2000 in ninth place on the school's all-time leading scorers list, broke a scoreless tie 36:53 into the game when he drilled a free kick into the left corner of the net, just past a diving freshman goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer.
The goal was the last that Billmeyer, who saved six shots on the day, would allow.
"Defensively, we're better than where we were at last year," Taylor said. "A lot of things are better than where we were last year, but to be honest, if we play at the level at which we played today, we're going to be in for a long season, so we're going to have to tighten things up."
The varsity was unable to muster any scores in the first half, despite booting 14 shots, but sophomore forward Alex Close put a shot past alumni Jacob Smith at 52:30 off of a rebound and into the right corner of the net.
Newcomer Stephen Hensor, a native of England, put the Beavers ahead to stay at 2-1when he drilled a precision shot into the right corner of the net at 78:08. The varsity blasted 31 shots at Collin McMillan and Smith on the day.
"There were a lot of opportunities that we missed today that will have to be put away against better teams," Taylor said.
The Beavers will be back in action when they face Brigham Young in an exhibition game at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25.
