CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team battled the Brigham Young Cougars to a scoreless tie on Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium in an exhibition match.
Both teams had several opportunities to score, but solid defense and goalkeeping prevented the offenses from capitalizing.
OSU's freshman goalkeeper Mark Muleady stopped the Cougars' best chance at scoring when he charged a BYU forward and smothered the shot attempt from just inside the goal box. The Beavers were able to clear any threat that the Cougars could muster all afternoon.
"This was our first real test of the season," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said of the physical match that saw OSU credited with 20 fouls. "We have some tired bodies, but a lot of good things came out of it. We played very well and we looked good, except for one thing: we did not finish."
OSU's Aaron McHardy and Justin Kirk attempted three shots apiece, and the Beavers blasted 17 total, to BYU's 13.
OSU relied on forwards James Albert and Jesse Servin, a fact that contributed to the Beavers' struggle to score.
"We need to have healthy forwards," Taylor said. "Right now, we have two healthy forwards, but we need to have four."
Muleady came up with five saves for OSU, while John Morris stopped six shots for the Cougars. Daniel Yescas booted six unsuccessful shots for BYU.
"I thought the goalkeeping was excellent today," Taylor said. "We played solid soccer today except we didn't finish our opportunities. When you have 17 shots and you come away with nothing, that's not good."
Oregon State begins its regular season with a trip to Oklahoma, where they will take on Tulsa in the season opener on Friday, Sept. 1. OSU travels to Oral Roberts on Sunday, Sept. 3 before hosting the Oregon State/Diadora Classic Sept. 8-10. OSU will play Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Sept. 8 at 4:00 p.m., and Sacramento State on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 2:00 p.m.
