USC Holds Off Late Surge By Oregon State

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Brian Scalabrine scored 26 points and Jeff Trepagnier added 23 as Southern California held off a late surge by Oregon State for an 82-71 victory Thursday night.
Using a tight man-to-man defense, USC (14-11, 7-6 Pacific 10) forced 18 turnovers en route to the win, which keeps faint hopes for an at-large bid in the NCAA championships alive for the Trojans.
Deaundra Tanner and Josh Steinthal each scored 16 points to lead the Beavers (12-13, 4-10.)
USC was ahead 32-30 coming out of halftime and extended their lead to 62-50 as David Bluthenthal sank two free throws with 7:50 remaining. He finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
But Josh Steinthal connected on four consecutive 3-pointers to keep the Beavers close. Jones nailed a layup at 4:29 remaining to cut the USC lead to 68-63.
Jeff Trepagnier sealed the game for the Trojans by sinkng a free throw following an intentional foul by Tanner with 32.1 seconds left.
After falling behind 11-6, USC used a 15-2 run midway through the first half to take a 21-13 lead. Scalabrine scored four points and Trepagnier added three during the 2:21 stretch.
The Beavers managed to climb back and cut the lead to 32-30 with 33 seconds remaining in the half.
