CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State assured itself of at least a .500 dual meet record for the first time in nine years by beating Puget Sound 108-86 in non-league women's swimming Saturday at Stevens Natatorium. Freshman Naya Higashijima captured her fourth school record, adding the 500-yard freestyle mark with a time of 4 minutes, 59.78 seconds.
OSU (5-3 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) wraps up the regular season with a pair of dual meets at Washington State next weekend, meeting the Cougars on Friday night and Saturday morning. A win in either meet would give the Beavers their first winning season since going 7-4 in 1991.
The win over Puget Sound (5-3, 3-0 Northwest Conference) completed the Beavers home schedule, and OSU used the meet against the Division III power to work on some things.
"It was fun to swim this meet," OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. "Not only were we able to swim off events, but with people who swam their normal events, we were able to try new things, work on some dfferent aspects of racing that we normally wouldn't be able to practice."
Higashijima's time in the 500 freestyle eclipsed Tammy Scott's time of 5:00.00 set iat the 1989 Pacific-10 Championships. Higashijima already owned the 200 butterfly, 1,000 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle school records.
With Higashijima's effort Saturday, the Beavers have now set a record in all but one of their dual meets this seaon. OSU has set school records 14 times in eight different events this season.
Higashijima, who also won the 200 freestyle, swam to her 500 freestyle after being asked to modify her technique by Podkoscielny.
"We asked Naya to swim a little differently," Podkoscielny said. "She didn't necessarily do it the way we wanted her to, but the outcome was what we were hoping for."
OSU jumped out to an early 40-15 lead by capturing the top two places in each of the first three races. The Beavers' Paula Finlay won the 200 backstroke and moved onto the school's all-time top 10 list in the event with a time of 2:09.15, good for sixth place.
Oregon State picked up additional victories from Finlay in the 200 individual medley, Amy Imwalle in the 1,650 freestyle, Arianna Higuera in the 50 freestyle, Jill McMinn in the 200 butterfly, Bonnie Renwick in the 100 freestyle and Sheila Tehranchi in the 200 breaststroke. The Beavers also won both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
After swimming at Washington State, OSU will head to the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, California Feb. 24-26. Podkoscielny likes his team's confidence heading into the end of the season.
"They're progressing great," Podkoscielny said. "At this point of the season we've never been as confident, and we've never swam the way we're swimming right now. I really look forward to not only Washington State, but the Pac-10s."
