OSU Swims To First Winning Season In Nine Years

Pullman, Wash. - - Oregon State raced its way to its first winning dual meet record in nine years Friday night with a 140-121 Pacific-10 victory over the Cougars of Washington State in Pullman. The win also snapped an 18 meet losing-streak against the Cougars, dating back to a 118-114 win in Corvallis during the 1987-88 season.
Paula Finlay and Naya Higashijima set the pace for the Beavers (6-3 overall, 1-1 Pacific 10) by winning two races apiece. Finlay's time of 4 minutes, 35.01 seconds in th 400-yard individual medley broke a Gibb Pool record that dated back to 1981.
OSU won six of the 14 races on the night. Finlay captured not only the 400 IM, but the 200-freestyle as well. Higashijima took first in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle, while Arianna Higuera won the 100 freestyle. The 200 freestyle relay went to OSU's team of Higuera, Bonnie Renwick, Suzanne Broda, and Erin Buckley.
After the Beavers wrap up their regular season Saturday against the Cougars (1-10, 0-4), they will have almost three weeks before heading to the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif. Feb. 24-26.
