Higashijima Adds Another School Record

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Naya Higashijima picked up her third school record Saturday morning - in the 1,650-yard freestyle - but the Beavers fell to Washington 147-115 in Pacific-10 women's swimming at Stevens Natatorium. OSU (4-3 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) turned in its strongest performance in recent memory against the Huskies (7-3, 3-1).
Higashijima's mark of 17 minutes, 9.84 seconds in the 1,650 freestyle bettered the 17:10.16 set by Holly Andrus in the 1981 Regional Championships at Pullman, Wash. Higashijima, a freshman, also owns the OSU school records in the 1,000 freestyle and 200 butterfly, she has set or lowered her own records eight times this season.
While Higashijima's performance was good enough for a new OSU record, it wasn't quite enough for first place in the event, as the Huskies' Janella Bart won the race in 17:05.28. Higashijima did come back to win the 200 butterfly in 2:04.68, just .15 of a second off her own school record.
Those two efforts, coming in the span of five races, impressed OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny.
"She came back after a mile (the 1,650)," Podkoscielny said of the 200 butterfly victory. "I was a distance swimmer, and unless you swim a mile, there's no pain like it. To come back and have a 200 fly like that, it's awesome."
The Beavers also won both relays (200 medley and 200 freestyle) and got victories from Paula Finlay in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.33) and 200 breaststroke (2:23.18). The team score of 147-115 was a solid improvement over a 153-100 loss at the hands of the Huskies in Seattle last season.
"We're used to being spectators in a meet against the Huskies," Podkoscielny said. "I didn't count on winning the relays. It was exciting for us to come out and put together a team effort and be able to win the relays. This shows what this team is all about - sacrificing and unselfishness and putting it together as a team. I think that's a trademark of this group and it showed on the relays."
The Beavers got out to an early 13-4 lead after one race when the 200 medley relay team of Magda Modelska, Finlay, Bonnie Renwick, and Arianna Higuera won in 1:47.87. The Huskies captured first place in six of the next eight races to take a 97-72 lead after nine races, but Oregon State refused to go quietly.
Finlay, Sheila Tehranchi, Kristen Severance, and Maureen Pendergast placed first through fourth, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke to pull the Beavers within 12 points at 100-88 after 10 races.
"The breaststrokers stepped up and did a great job," said Podkoscielny, whose team also had Finlay and Tehranchi finish one-two in the 100 breaststroke. "We just need to make sure we fill up a couple of spots that we're missing right now."
Oregon State wrapped up the meet with the victory in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Higuera, Renwick, Finlay and Erin Buckley finished in 1:37.75.
"They competed well," Podkoscielny said of the Beavers, who didn't slow their training last week to rest for the dual. "One of the signs of being tired is that the second half (of a race) isn't there. It showed, because the Washington girls were coming back on us strong ... I don't want to make it sound bad, but we missed a couple of events that we were hoping we could have won. The girls swam awesome."
Besides Higashijima's record in the 1,650 freestyle, OSU made another entry on its all-time top-10 lists in individual events. Higuera stayed in fifth place on the 100 freestyle list, but improved her time to 52:31 as she finished second in the event.
The Beavers' final home meet will be Saturday, Jan. 29 at Stevens Natatorium when they meet Puget Sound in a non-league dual.
