SAN DIEGO, Calif. - J.P. Capodanno's goal early in the second half lifted Oregon State to a 2-1 win over San Diego State in non-league men's soccer Sunday afternoon. The Beavers (2-0-0 overall) trailed early but tied the game on a penalty kick by Greg Howes late in the first half.
"It was another great team effort from everybody," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "The whole team played well."
The Beavers, who play at No. 24 San Diego on Friday at 7:30 p.m., watched the Aztecs (1-1-0) force the action early in Sunday's match.
"Their guys came out hard and our guys lost their composure," Taylor said. "We just didn't come out to play in the first half, and they kept knocking at the door."
The door opened in the 16th minute, when David Beltran scored off an assist by Oscar Rodriguez to put San Diego State up 1-0. OSU finally answered in the 42nd minute when Howes was pulled down in the box and awarded a penalty kick, he converted to even the score at 1-1.
"We finally figured things out and got organized a bit," Taylor said. "From there, it looked like we broke their back with that goal. In the second half, we looked to definitely be the better team. We knocked the ball around and controlled the pace. They looked flat, like they gave it all in the first half."
The Beavers finally took the lead in the 57th minute. Howes put a ball over the top that bounced in front of Capodanno, he ran onto it on the right side, then drove it across the goal mouth and into the lower left corner of the net.
