SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Oregon State suffered its first loss of the men's soccer season Friday night, falling 4-0 to San Diego in the first round of the Diadora Tournament. The Beavers (2-1-0 overall) will meet No. 18 Cal State-Fullerton in the tournament's second round Sunday at 1 p.m.
San Diego, which was nationally-ranked in the NSCAA preseason poll, picked up its first goal within the first minute of play and scored twice in each half.
"When you let in a goal that early, it's kind of deflating," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "It's hard to get back into it. It was only 2-0 at halftime and we told the guys if we can get one back, it could be a very different game."
Taylor said all four USD goals showed the inexperience of an OSU squad that puts as many as seven freshmen on the field at once.
"That team counterattacked very well - hats off to them," Taylor said. "They did what we thought they were capable of ... we learned some valuable lessons and we did correct some things at halftime. We had some very good opportunities that, if we finish them, change the course of the game but the better team definitely won tonight."
The key now for the Beavers is bouncing back to meet Cal State-Fullerton
"How quickly can we regroup, get our chins up, get organized again and get ready to play Sunday?" Taylor said. "That will be the real sign of how quickly we're coming along as a team."
Sy Reeves had a goal and an assist for San Diego (3-0), while Eric Van Demen, Antonio Gonzales and Joel Armstrong added goals. For OSU, Greg Howes managed six shots and Aaron McHardy three.
