OSU Splits Women's Swimming Double Dual

FRESNO, Calif. - Oregon State topped San Diego State 170.5-110.5 and lost to Fresno State 136-126 in a non-league women's swimming double-dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Central Unified Aquatics Center. OSU (3-1 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) now has two weeks to get ready for one of its biggest meets of the season, the Speedo Cup that will be held Dec. 2-4 in Long Beach, Calif.
"This was a good test for us," OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. "Our other two wins (over San Jose State and Utah) came easily, but today we were pushed to the limit. They showed us some things we need to work on, and that's why you go to duals and compete."
With the meet being held in an outdoor pool, the Beavers also got a bit of a challenge when the temperature dropped into the 40s midway through the meet.
"It wasn't optimal conditions, but that's no excuse," Podkoscielny said. "It was a level playing field for everyone ... it was a great experience. It put our girls in a position where they challenged. With a little more luck, we win that meet. We lost some close races, but we won some close races - it was good competition for us."
In beating San Diego State, OSU got three wins each from Magda Modelska and Naya Higashijima as Modelska captured the 100-yard backstroke (59.10), 200 backstroke (2:08.03), and 400 individual medley (4:34.99) and Higashijima the 200 butterfly (2:07.29), 500 freestyle (5:06.29) and 1,650 freestyle (17:29.17). Paula Finlay won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.04) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.60) and Arianna Higuera won the 100 freestyle (53.53) against the Aztecs.
Against Fresno State, OSU got wins from Finlay in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, from Modelska in the 200 backstroke and from Higashijima in the 1,650 freestyle. OSU also won both the 400 medley relay (3:56.06) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.09) against both SDSU and FSU.
"Both our relays swam really, really well," Podkoscielny said. "Our relay takeoffs improved a lot ... we're really looking forward to two weeks from now when we go to the Speedo Cup."
The meet was the first this season in which OSU didn't set at least one school record, but Beavers made seven new entries on the school's list of all-time top 10 performers in each event.
Modelska moved up to fourth place in the 400 IM, climbed to fifth place in the 200 backstroke and improved her fifth-place time in the 100 backstroke. Higashijima jumped onto the 1,650 freestyle list in fourth place and climbed to fifth place in the 500 freestyle. Finlay moved up to eighth place in the 200 freestyle (1:55.53) and Jill McMinn joined the 1,650 freestyle list in 10th place (18:11.71).
