OSU Sets Three School Marks In Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State set three school records Thursday night as the Beavers beat Utah 124-107 in non-league women's swimming at Stevens Natatorium. OSU freshman Naya Higashijima bettered her own two-week-old record in the 200-yard butterfly and set a new mark in the 1,000 freestyle, while freshman Paula Finlay broke the OSU record in the 100 breaststroke.
The start of the meet was delayed one hour because Utah had travel problems reaching Portland.
"It's pretty exciting - three school records, I'm proud of them," Oregon State head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said of his team. "With the meet starting a little late, I thought that was going to affect the girls a little bit. We timed everything perfect to start the meet at seven o'clock. That one hour could have distracted us, but they didn't let it get to them.
"They jumped at them right away, took a big lead and never looked back."
The Beavers (2-0 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) hadn't backed off their training for the meet.
"We just went off of two weeks of pretty hard work, so I was a little nervous," Podkoscielny said. "This is a tough group of swimmers, and they showed up for this meet and swam hard."
OSU won seven of 13 events against the Utes (0-2, 0-1 Mountain West). The Beavers' next meet will be a three-way competition against San Diego State and Fresno State at Fresno, Calif., on Nov. 20.
"We lost to San Diego State last year, so we'll look for a little vindication there," Podkoscielny said. "Fresno State, they're a tough team. It's definitely not going to be anything like we went through last two weeks."
Against Utah, Higashijima lowered her mark in the 200 butterfly to 2 minutes, 36.6 seconds only two weeks after setting a record of 2:07.44 in her first collegiate meet. Higashajima's time against Utah of 10:21.68 in the 1,000 freestyle topped the old record of 10:23.50 set by Kelly Kaplan in the 1988 Pacific-10 Championships.
"It's not a surprise when you look at Naya in practice," Podkoscielny said. "She's a very hard worker. We're slowly getting used to getting more surprises down the road. She's just having an awesome season so far."
Finlay swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.34, beating the old OSU record of 1:06.83 set by Becky Curtis in the 1991 Pacific-10 Championships.
"She swam a pretty fast split last weekend, so we anticipated that she would be there to take the school record," Podkoscielny said. "It was a great swim for her."
Other winners for OSU were Arianna Higuera in the 50 freestyle (24.30) and 100 freestyle (52.69), Magda Modelska in the 100 backstroke (59.61) and Finlay in the 200 freestyle (1:56.02). There were three individual events in which the Beavers entered only non-scoring competitors and OSU had the fastest times in all three of those events, with Modelska in the 400 individual medley (4:36.44) and 200 backstroke (2:10.13) and Higashijima in the 500 freestyle (5:09.40).
The Beavers also entered only non-scoring teams in the evening's only relay, the 200 freestyle, but had the fastest time with the team of Bonnie Renwick, Trista Hedlind, Jill Personius and Higuera finishing in 1:41.07.
In all, Oregon State made 11 new entries on the school's lists of the top 10 performers in each event. Besides the three school records, Jill McMinn improved from seventh to fourth in the 1,000 freestyle (10:38.50), Modelska jumped into fifth place in the 400 IM, bettered her fifth-place time in the 100 backstroke and improved from seventh to sixth in the 200 backstroke, Suzanne Starkey jumped from a sixth-place tie to sixth in the 100 backstroke (59.78) and improved her eighth-place time in the 200 backstroke (2:10.56), Finlay went from 10th to ninth in the 200 freestyle, and Higashijima improved her eighth-place time in the 500 freestyle.
