PULLMAN, Wash. - Oregon State picked up its first win of the Pacific-10 women's soccer season Sunday afternoon, beating Washington State 3-2. The Beavers (8-7-1 overall, 1-4-0 Pac-10) got goals from BreeAnna Jolin, Anne Marie Fallow and Dante Lipfert plus a pair of assists by Beth Thomason in the win.
"We played very well," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We made some changes and kids came in and did well. Just making those changes makes a difference sometimes."
OSU took the lead for good midway through the second half, scoring back-to-back goals within 90 seconds to take a 3-1 lead in the 67th minute against WSU (6-9-0, 0-5-0).
Fallow put OSU in front in the 66th minute. Leila Kaady's free kick was tipped toward the back post by Beth Thomason, and Fallow put it away to make it 2-1.
In the 67th minute, it was Lipfert's turn. Thomason passed the ball to the freshman in the box, and she finished it off from 10 yards out to put Oregon State ahead 3-1.
With the two assists, Thomason now has eight in her OSU career, tying her for ninth place on the Beavers' list of all-time leaders.
Oregon State had gone in front 1-0 in the 17th minute on Jolin's unassisted goal. A Cougar tried to clear a header and it went off WSU goalkeepr Lindsey Jorgensen to Jolin at the top of the 18-yard box.
"Bree had one of her strongest games since she's been at Oregon State," Fennah said. "She worked very hard and finished a very good goal, and she put their defenders to pressure. She showed very well for our midfield players."
Jolin's goal was her seventh of the season, putting her in a tie for ninth place on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders.
Fallow and Nikki Ferchland saw increased playing time due to injuries suffered by Katie Henderson (ankle) and Jen VanderArend (foot) against the Cougars.
"Anne Marie did a super job following up on Leila's free kick (to score the goal), and Nikki was very solid at the back for us," Fennah said.
Henderson and VanderArend are both questionable for next weekend, when OSU plays its final home games of the season. The Beavers will be at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium against 15th-ranked UCLA on Friday at 3 p.m. and against seventh-ranked Southern California on Sunday at noon, the Sunday game is the first game of a doubleheader that includes OSU's men's team against Cal Poly.
