The evolvement of women’s intercollegiate athletics on a national scale can be traced to the efforts of groundbreaking leaders such as Sylvia Moore.
Moore was a key figure in the formation and implementation of Title IX while serving as Oregon State’s Director of Women’s Athletics.Moore arrived at OSU in 1966 as a physical education instructor and was presented the opportunity to be the school's women's basketball coach (1966-67) and women’s gymnastics coach (1966-75).
She would also serve two tenures as the Director of Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics, and was promoted to Deputy Athletic Director when the men and women’s intercollegiate programs merged. She later served as the interim Director of Athletics for the Beavers. Her career awards are numerous and include such distinguished merits as the 1990 Beaver Champion Award recipient -- a university-wide honor granted annually for "performance of the highest quality" and in 1999 the OSU Women's Center Woman of Achievement Award.
