Ricky Brumfield

Special Teams Coordinator/Cornerbacks

Ricky Brumfield is in his first season at Oregon State in 2026 as special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach, arriving in Corvallis with more than two decades of experience coordinating special teams units at the collegiate level and 11 years of NFL experience through the league’s Minority Coaching Fellowship program.

Brumfield came to Oregon State after one season at Syracuse. He previously spent two seasons at Georgia Tech (2023-24) as special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach and one season as associate head coach, special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Florida International in 2022.

Coaching Highlights
• Improved overall special teams efficiency by more than 60 spots in his first year at every school he has worked, with at least one player breaking an NCAA or school record at every level he has coached
• Spent 11 years working with various NFL franchises through the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship program
• Directed a 2025 Syracuse special teams unit that ranked 18th nationally in net punting; redshirt freshman kicker Tripp Woody made 12 of 14 field goal attempts and all 22 extra points
• At Georgia Tech in 2023, coached placekicker Aidan Birr to Freshman All-American honors after connecting on 17 of 19 field goals; the special teams unit blocked four kicks (third-most nationally) and improved more than 80 spots in the national special teams efficiency rankings
• At Florida International in 2022, oversaw a special teams unit that ranked 23rd nationally in efficiency — a 49-spot improvement from the previous year — while blocking three kicks (top 20 nationally) and allowing no special teams scores
• At Virginia, part of the staff that ended a six-year losing stretch in 2018 and won the ACC Coastal Division and reached the Orange Bowl in 2019; coached Joe Reed to First Team All-America honors as a return man in 2019 after Reed led the nation in kick return average and helped Virginia set single-season program records for kick return yards (1,204) and average (28.7)
• At UTSA in 2017, coached freshman placekicker Jared Sackett to USA Today Freshman All-American honors and Lou Groza Award semifinalist recognition, while punter Yannis Routsas earned Ray Guy Award semifinalist honors — making UTSA one of only three schools nationally to have both a kicker and a punter up for the top specialist awards
• Spent three seasons at Western Kentucky (2013-15), helping the Hilltoppers to a pair of bowl wins, the 2015 Conference USA Championship and a No. 24 final ranking; kicker Garrett Schwettman led the nation in field goal percentage (93.8) in his final season
