Pete Herber

- Associate Head Track and Field Coach (Jumps, Sprints/Hurdles, Relays, Multi's)
- Email:
Pete Herber was named an assistant coach for the track & field program on Sept. 18, 2017.
Herber joined the program as the new sprints and jumps coach with a wealth of experience, having spent time at the University of Utah, the University of South Florida, Iowa State University and Coe College.
In 2023, Herber coached Anneke Moersdorf to a pair of school records and near-misses at national meets in the multis while Moersdorf and Delaney Bahn rewrote the school record book in the long and triple jumps. Moersdorf set both the school records for the hepathlon and pentathlon during the season, finishing just a couple spots off NCAAs in each. Herber also coached the junior to school records in the outdoor long jump and both triple jumps while Bahn broke the indoor long jump record. Both athletes scored in the long jump at Pac-12s and Moersdorf placed fifth in the heptathlon.
In the sprints, Adael Scatena highlighted a strong year for OSU. The redshirt junior broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles – her second record of the year – en route to a sixth-place finish and three points. All told, the Beavs recorded 25 new OSU Top 10 marks in the sprints, jumps and multis under Herber’s guidance in 2023 including a new school record in the indoor 4x400-meter relay.
The 2022 season saw continued improvement for the Beavers on the track with 14 new Oregon State top 10 marks. Emma Nelson highlighted the year by recorded the sixth-best mark in school history in the high jump with a 5-10 clearance indoors while Scatena ran the school’s third-best 200 meters.
The Beavers had a historic outdoor track and field season during Herber's fourth season as an assistant coach. The 2020-21 Oregon State track and field team posted a combined 14 top-10 performances in school history between jumps, sprints, and multi's. Herber helped coach Delaney Bahn to seventh-place long jump finish at the Pac-12 Championships with a PR of 6.05m to score team points for OSU.
A leader in education, Herber was the lead instructor for the Pac-12 Global/Federation University Sports China Coaching Alliance during the 2016-17 school year.
Herber's time in Corvallis has brought immediate success as he led Ann Wingeleth during the 2019 season to become just the fourth student-athlete from Oregon State to qualify for the NCAA Championships since the program's revival back in 2005. She joins Laura Carlyle (2011, 2012), Kara Hallock (2017) and Destiny Dawson (2018) as the only Beavers to qualify for the championship event in the past 15 seasons. Wingeleth is tied for No. 6 in Oregon State's All-Time List and garnered All-American honors under Herber's guidance.
Herber has coached six NCAA qualifiers, five All-Americans, and four U.S. Championship qualifiers. His coaching has allowed nine student-athletes to set school records, and numerous athletes to be conference scorers.
A 1995 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Herber was an eight-time varsity letter winner for the Panthers track and field team. He was a four-time All-Missouri Valley Conference High Jumper, and a three-time NCAA National Championships Qualifier.

“I was searching for a coach with great experience in the jumps/sprints area, and Pete fits the mold of what we are trying to accomplish here. I believe that Pete will continue to elevate this area of our program to be competitive at the Pac-12 level.” – Oregon State Track and Field Head Coach Louie Quintana
