Whyte Track and Field Center
In September of 2012 Oregon State University opened the Whyte Track and Field Center. The ribbon-cutting ceremony represented another milestone to the rebirth of the Beavers’ track and field program.
The program, under the direction of head coach Kelly Sullivan, continues to grow with women’s track and cross-country expanding since being officially reintroduced in September of 2004. In addition to the women’s teams, several of OSU’s football student-athletes give the Beavers representation on the men’s side.
Phase I included an International Association of Athletics Federation certified Olympic-caliber polyurethane surface, a FieldTurf infield, a nine-lane track, high jump aprons, long jump, triple jump runways, pole vault and javelin runways, shot put throw sectors and dual discus rings.
Phase II, of the donor-funded project, includes the installation of grandstands, a press box, video scoreboard, a hammer throw area, distance warm-up space, broadcast infrastructure, restrooms, concessions and other amenities. For hosting the 2017 Pac-12 multis in April, the video scoreboard, hammer throw area, distance warm-up space and broadcast infrastructure will be completed.
Phase III of the campaign establishes a $5 million endowment to support a men’s team. This will complete the reinstatement of the programs, which were dropped in 1988.
Oregon State has a rich track and field tradition that includes numerous national, international and Olympic competitors, including gold medalist Dick Fosbury.
