Standout Quarterback Joins Program
Former Utah State quarterback Darrell Garretson has enrolled for summer term at Oregon State University, head coach Gary Andersen announced Monday.
The 6-foot 200-pound Garretson will not be eligible for the 2015 season due to NCAA regulations related to transfer rules between Division I programs. The sociology major will be a junior athletically for the 2016 season with two years of playing eligibility remaining.
“Even though Darrell will not be able to participate in games this season, his leadership on and off the field will be of great benefit for our young quarterbacks,” Andersen said.
Garretson started 11 of 13 games he appeared in over two seasons for Utah State, where he worked with current OSU quarterbacks coach Kevin McGiven. He passed for 2,586 yards at USU, completing 217 of 344 pass attempts (63.1 percent) with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week following the Aggies’ win at No. 18 BYU last season where he passed for 321 yards and three scores.
As a true freshman, he was forced into action after a rash of injuries to the Aggies’ quarterback corps. He was 6-1 as a starter, which included leading Utah State to a win in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl over No. 24 Northern Illinois.
Garretson was a prep standout at Chandler High School in Arizona where he was a first team all-state performer and the U.S. Marine Corps Elite Warrior Arizona Player of the Year as a senior following a 3,065-yard 27-touchdown performance.
