Anica Yoo Fires 70 To Open NCAA Regionals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Anica Yoo fired a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the San Antonio Regional at the NCAA Division I Women‘s Golf Championships on Thursday.
Yoo, a senior from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, had four birdies and two bogeys at the par-72, 6,350-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Club and sits in a tie for 14th place in a field that includes 18 teams and six individuals.
The low six teams and low three individuals (not on those teams) will advance to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, taking place Friday, May 22 through Wednesday, May 27 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, playing as an individual from the University of Kansas, and Hayley Davis of Baylor hold the clubhouse lead with a 5-under 67. Four golfers shot 4-under 68 rounds and 32 of the 96-player field finished in red figures.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole event will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT (5:30 a.m. PT) with tee times off the first and 10th holes. Yoo will tee off at 8:15 a.m. CT on the first hole and be paired with Kawinpakorn and Manon Molle of New Mexico, who shot a 1-under 71 in the first round.
“Anica played real stead today,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “It was a pretty clean, pretty solid round. She was real consistent and stuck with her routine. She and Dawn (Shockley) worked real well in the fairways choosing her clubs and her approach to the golf course.
“She had a couple of birdies and a couple of bogeys, but I think overall we are pleased. She is pleased as well with getting the first round under her belt. She’s definitely in the tournament and we look forward to gaining some momentum off her round today and having some fun the next couple of days.”
Yoo started on the 10th hole and reeled off three straight pars before birdying the par-5, 534-yard 13th hole. She took a bogey on 16 but birdied the par-3, 135-yard 17th and par-4, 390-yard 18th holes for a 2-under 34 going out.
After two pars and a bogey on three, Yoo got a chirp on the par-5, 492-yard fifth hole before closing with four consecutive pars for an even-par 36 coming in and a solid 2-under 70 for the round.
