Play Suspended At NCAA Championships

BRADENTON, Fla. – Anica Yoo was 2 over through 14 holes and tied for 23rd place when play was suspended due to weather and darkness at the first round of the NCAA Division I Women‘s National Golf Championships on Friday.
Yoo started on the 10th hole at the par-72, 6,468-yard Concession Golf Club and got off to a quick start with two pars and birdies on the par-3, 175-yard 11th and par-5, 503-yard 13th holes to get to 2 under. After back-to-back double bogeys on 14 and 15, she got a par on 16 before a lengthy lightning delay.
The one-hour delay didn’t faze Yoo, as she pared 17 and 18 for a 2-over 38 going out. She added a par on the first hole before taking a bogey on the tough par-4, 414-yard second. After two consecutive pars, she dropped in a birdie putt on the par-4, 392-yard fifth hole before play was halted for the day.
“It was a long first day at the national championships,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “We battled through two weather delays on a very difficult and challenging golf course. Anica played real steady. She got off to a good start with a couple of birdies and then stumbled a little bit two holes in a row but, then after that, she really gathered herself and played very consistent.
“We’ll get out early tomorrow morning and finish the first round and go right into the second round. This golf course is one of the most challenging golf courses that I’ve ever seen for a women’s collegiate event. It will very much identify the best players and the best ball strikers.
“Anica is having fun and staying in the moment like we always talk about. We are pleased with the start and look forward to continuing to enjoy this experience with her.”
The field for the NCAA National Championships includes 24 teams and 12 individuals that qualified at four regional competitions.
The NCAA National Championships consists of three days of stroke play Friday through Sunday, after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion.
The suspended first round will resume Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET (5:30 a.m. PT) and the second round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET (6 a.m. PT). Live scoring is available at this link.
