Beavers Drop Double Header Against #18 Wildcats

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team (23-14, 4-8) finished the annual DAM Cancer series Saturday against the No. 18 Arizona Wildcats (31-9, 7-5). Dani Gilmore and Natalie Hampton both had home runs on the day, but the Beavers dropped the double header 7-2 in the first game and 22-3 in the second game.
Hampton put the Beavers on the scoreboard first in game one Saturday, driving a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for her fourth home run of the season.
The Wildcats strung together two walks and three hits including a home run in the inning, scoring four runs and taking a 4-1 lead. The team added two unearned runs in the fourth inning, with a walk and two hits, taking a 6-1 lead.
Gilmore put another run on the board for OSU in the sixth inning, hitting a one out home run to right center field, giving her a team best eight on the season.
The Wildcats added a run in the seventh inning to make the score 7-2, a score that would hold giving Arizona the game.
The two teams returned to the field after an hour break for the third game of the series.
Arizona took an early lead, scoring six runs in the first inning and another in the second.
The Beavers scored twice in the third inning. Mikela Manewa started things with a walk, followed by a stolen base. Kori Nishitomi singled down the left field line, scoring Manewa. Gilmore came to the plate next and doubled to right center field, scoring Nishitomi and making it 7-2 after three innings.
Arizona scored eight runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth to push the game out of reach, with the score ending at 22-3.
Manewa went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base on the day. Hampton went 2-for-5 Saturday. Gilmore finished 2-for-6, leading the team with three extra base hits and six total bases.
The Beavers will return to the field Friday, April 10 at 1 p.m. when they start a new home series against the Utah Utes.
