Beavers Finish Sixth At Pac-12 Championship

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Oregon State men’s golf team concluded the three-day, 72-hole Pac-12 Championship with an impressive sixth-place finish on Wednesday with two players finishing in the top 20.
The Beavers shot a 38-over 361-357-357-363--1,438 at the par-70, 7,257-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club to finish in the upper half of the conference and ahead of three ranked teams (No. 14 UCLA, No. 25 California and No. 49 Colorado).
Oregon State will find out on Monday, May 4 if the strong showing earned the Beavers a berth in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships. The selections will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Monday at 7 a.m. during Morning Drive. Additionally, the show will be streamed live on the Golf Channel website and posted afterwards on the NCAA website at www.ncaa.com.

Sophomore Kevin Murphy shot his second round of the tourney in red figures on Wednesday, a 1-under 69, to move up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 11th place with a 1-over 68-72-72-69--281. It was a major improvement from last year when the Rogue River, Ore., native finished his first Pac-12 Tournament in a tie for 52nd place with a 20-over 79-73-80-76--308.
Senior Alex Franklin also posted a top-20 finish, a tie for 19th place, with a 5-over 68-67-71-78--285. He finished in a tie for 36th place at last year’s Pac-12 Championship, his first season at Oregon State after transferring, with a 13-over 72-75-77-77--301.
Junior Tyler Carlson was steady throughout the four rounds, shooting a 9-over 75-73-69-72--289 to finish in a tie for 31st place and sophomore Conner Kumpula was also consistent with a 15-over 74-75-73-73--295 for a tie for 49th place.
Junior Brian Jung bounced back from a tough opening round to finish in 53rd place with a 17-over 79-74-72-72--297 and freshman Jonas Liebich wrapped up his first tournament since the fall season with a 19-over 76-71-75-77--299 for a tie for 56th place.
Stanford shot a 10-under 340 in the final round to come back and win the team title for the second consecutive year. Maverick McNealy of Stanford led to wire-to-wire to claim medalist honors by 10 strokes with a Pac-12 Championship record 18-under 65-68-68-61--262.
